Main points to present: -Inspirations for Thesis (Malletkat,Marimba Lumina,Ryichi Sakamoto,Rhythm Manifest[o],Todd Winkler – interaction between music and visual feedback. Hitches Bitches.
-Readings Covered *Amplifying Reflective Thinking in Musical Performance *Visual Music-Searching for an Aesthetic *Exploration of the correspondence between visual and acoustic parameter spaces. (Gerhard et al.) *Issues for Designing a flexible expressive audiovisual system for real-time performance and composition (Franco et al) *Rhythm Manifesto – Ailbhe Keogan
-Performance Space *Possible Stand alone device (wireless if possible) *Projection Boards behind the performer to showcase visuals being created by the performer. *Webcam focused on the energetic hand movements of the musicians.
-Instrument *Present Device – Possibly have some resemblance to Marimba Lumina/ Mallet Kat. Separate Parameters are musical notes (tones/semitones) *Ability to transmit audio *Ability to graphically illustrate music being played.
-Emperical Research *Interview with Cormac Byrne, Marimba player. TBC *Interview with David Merrill (Research candidate, MIT) 16th March 2007 *Interview with Ailbhe Keogan 27/02/2007 *YouTube videos (Ryichi Sakamoto, Levin, Paradiso etc) *Transmediale Festival
-Projection *Attempt to incorporate a 3 way projection board for immersion of light and colour around musician. *Main board – 2 smaller boards to left and right of musician. Mix of Visuals, Webcam footage – allocating different footage to diff boards or mixing all together. *Does surface have to be boards or can we create an environment that gives optimum user experience??
-Visuals Need to speak to an academic or accomplished musician to ascertain what they would visualize from music. Ie How would the home note be graphically represented. Interrupted Cadence – expectation, Relative Minor – sinister, dark, gothic. TIMBRE OF SOUND!!!! Famous Blind musician????? Stevie Wonder available Elelyn Glennie – Killarney 12/13/14th July
-Extra Scope *Multi Instrumental *Dynamic Display Visuals *Feedback of hand movements (How/where/when)
-Screens *What allows the greatest form of Interaction?? *Objects vs Hand movements. *Suggestive hints in the Instrument??
-Software Required Unsure of which software to use to map sound to PC to visuals. *Pure Data vs Max MSP vs VVVV *Director (Visuals) *Flash (Prototype) *Photoshop *Logic Pro (prototyping) until real sound files compiled *3D Studio Max
Tutorials? Useful Patches(Fiddle, Bong?)
-Concerns Latency. Pressure Sensitivity Number of projectors needed Keeping costs low.
Presentation went well. Our rationale is clearly defined but we could have explained usability and interaction in more detail i.e. scenarios, storyboards, etc. Also: 1.Mikael recommended we contact Oyvind Brandstegg. 2.He also mentioned Speer. We need to get back on to him about this as I'm not quite sure about this. I think it's a plug in for PD. 3.Spoke about Thesis title. Mikael suggested Multimarimba, as in Multimedia, Multifunctional, Multimodal i.e. not conforming to the limitations of a tradional instrument. For example, a Marimba has no vibrato - let's make it have vibrato. I like this title. 4.Keep different cultures in mind, relative minor is calming in China rather than dark and sinister. Do empirical work with different cultures in mind. 5.Levers on device to change modes, pitch etc. 6.Interview potential users, musicians, music academics, musical novices. Remember:few people are non-musical.
Interactive Media Masters student currently preparing my thesis. Main skills are in graphic and webdesign, but have also acquired interest and skills in film, photography, sound synthesis and 3D modelling as the course has developed.
